Full-Stack Product Engineer (Oscar)
Who are Illuminate Tech, and what are we building?
We're building Oscar, the infrastructure layer that makes AI trustworthy enough for online safety compliance. We help tech companies identify and respond to harms before they happen. Our product succeeds only if a committed, visionary team with strong principles is willing to think creatively to make it work.
We're looking for a full-stack developer to join as our 5th team member as we take Oscar to market. Our early adopters are household name tech companies with tens of millions of active users in the UK alone.
What are the vibes like?
We care a lot about what we're building, about each other, and about how we work together. We're looking for someone who will understand the mission of the company, who is willing to work hard, be ambitious, have a laugh, and resolve issues with kindness when things get tough.
The role
- Ownership. Own features end-to-end, from data model through to UI, building the user-facing product compliance teams rely on.
- Architecture. Help shape how Oscar's architecture scales as a structured context layer for AI-driven compliance tasks, including how people review, trust and act on what the AI produces.
- Integrations. Design and build integrations with third-party platforms (content moderation systems, evidence/data sources, developer tools) and the retrieval that makes that data usable by AI.
- Strategy. Work directly with the founders to shape product strategy. We want someone who challenges specs, spots opportunities, and thinks about what makes Oscar defensible.
- Breadth. Thrive in a small, fast-moving team where you'll wear multiple product hats (technical scoping, dev, infrastructure, support).
Our stack: TypeScript, Next.js (React), Tailwind, Postgres (Supabase), Drizzle, Claude API
About you
- Track record. Proven experience as a full-stack engineer, with production experience shipping features end-to-end at a startup or fast-moving team.
- AI/LLM experience. Hands-on experience building with LLMs or agent-based systems (structured outputs, tool use, grounding and citations, or evaluation) and a clear view on what makes AI output trustworthy enough to act on.
- Proactive. You've either worked at an early-stage startup before, or you're itching to; you want real ownership, not a narrow ticket queue. You identify problems no one else has spotted and fix them independently. You suggest better ways of doing things.
- Creative & strategic. You ask "why" before "how," push back on specs that don't hold up, and enjoy figuring out what makes a product hard to copy.
- Product craft. Comfortable building frontend features, and you care how they feel to use, not just whether they work.
- Mission fit. You care about the problem, not just the tech, and you're motivated by building something rigorous in a domain where getting it wrong has real consequences.
- Practical. Office-leaning hybrid working; we aim for c.3-4 days a week in our London office with some flexibility.
